The legacy of Madiba and those who failed
As i sit here today, my mind wonders to the last time I celebrated Mandela Day. A day that had meaning for such a long time, where us as South Africans would celebrate the Legacy of Nelson Mandela and all that he has done for South Africa.
Will I be celebrating the once famous "Madiba spirit" "Ubuntu" unfortunately not. As a very famous and renowned radio host said not so long ago....The Ubuntu spirit no longer exists in South Africa, the legacy of Madiba is gone.
Which is so true...and extremely a sad reality we have to come to terms with and we who still wish to uphold that legacy are paying the price of this new reality. A battle we tried our best to fight to keep the "Ubuntu" and Madiba Spirit alive and have greatly lost.
So many people have for years "piggy backed" of Madiba legacy, what he fought for and stood for, for their personal gain. Not for the country and its people.
Which is very reminiscent of so many things some take and hold it as a trophy, celebrating the events, people or legacies yet their actions is in direct contradiction of what they celebrate or who's legacy they use.
I think of the lives lost, the battles, the many marches the absolute determination of so many to make South Africa great, to free South Africans, to grow the economy, to create a rainbow nation where we all as South Africans can prosper.
As July is here, the Ubuntu spirit is far from visible...barely on many minds. Because those who are where they sit today, in their mansions, in their own settlements, driving the luxury cars, sleeping in the comfortable chairs of parliament who didn't get any of that by their own hard work or sacrifices or justified actions, the battles...no they got it through the legacy of Madiba.
South Africa is so far from what Madiba wanted it to be, and fought for and bleed for. Yet i don't see any remorse from those who uses his name for gain,
here i sit, seeing this country fall in decay more and more with my fellow South Africans who break their backs with me as we struggle to merely survive, as we try and navigate all the circus shows of those in power.
There are two recent events that occurred recently which truly broke my "Ubuntu" spirit; which were while I was helping someone decorate their father surprise birthday party, other people came to me and asked why am I there, am I South African, and the worst question of all was why was i not born in a white country? as in..what do you mean, why was i not born in a white country? this coming from people younger than me...so what are they being thought..that if you are white in South Africa you are not South African? or that South Africa is not a country for all.
Now please by no means am a racist, nor do i encourage it, but i can not fandom as to why our youth are being thought these things when Nelson Mandela fought so hard for a rainbow nation. Our youth are thought to hate one another based on race, rather to embrace. No child is born with hate or discrminination..it is thought to those older than us. I am proudly born South African, in a free country that Madiba gave to us, raised with the "Ubuntu" spirit and raised to embrace my fellow South Africans.
So why are our elders so completely destroying that very same belief and country they fought for by teaching their younger generation to be filled with hatred and discrimination? You are failing Madiba, this i tell you.
The other event is that a mere couple of months ago our damns was overflowing with water and people rejoiced as it was a blessing. This means that we will have water in our taps for some time.. or so one would think.
No, instead these last couple of days i have watched so many walk far and stand in long lines to get some water. This is in most suburbs and towns, i am not completely oblivious to the knowledge that this is a norm for those who live in undeveloped places. But for those who live in a suburb or town where the infrastructure is there and should be working..who work hard to be able to afford the cost of living in these developed areas to not have any of the very basic things they break there back to have.
Why? How?
If one take that, you start to see the countless potholes the dark days due to loadshedding...and you slowly begin to see a picture of a complete and utter broken system. One where empty promises are made that if prices are raised it will reduce loadshedding, or assist with the countless infrastructure upkeeps that needs to be done. we face the brim reality that we pay more, work harder, sacrifice more and more for less and less. and everything that was once truly functional prestige is now a distant memory.
Perhaps I should turn away from my dreams, stop believing that a rainbow consist of many colors and find my way to an abis.
But i know that is not what Madiba wanted for his children and I stand today, talking to all those who uses his name in vain, who abuses his name, who has gained from his name and legacy. You have failed!! and you should be ashamed.
While his legacy will always be of positivity, embracing, warmth, Ubuntu Spirit, grace, determination and more..Yours are of failure, destruction, laziness, disappointment.
Stories will be told of such....enjoy the mansions, luxury cars and comfortable seats for those are mere material gains you have stolen. Your legacy will be of a different kind and history will forever remember
you as the failures you are.
